Lehigh Valley Homelessness – Barriers and Resources

  • Bill White’s editorial and blog provide an overview of current homeless sheltering programs in Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton. That includes the winter shelter at the Allentown YMCA, Salvation Army, Sixth Street Shelter, Family Promise, Rescue Mission; Safe Harbor in Easton, and Bethlehem Emergency Sheltering Program. Evidently, the Lehigh Valley Rapid Results 100 Day Challenge on Homelessness is focused on Allentown only.
  • The LVHN Street Medicine team provides healthcare for homeless folks in the Lehigh Valley. The team sets up clinics at soup kitchens (including the TLCC soup kitchen in Alliance Hall) and homeless shelters in Allentown and Bethlehem weekly on a rotating basis.
There’s a TEDx talk posted on youtube by Nani Cuadrado who is a Physician’s Assistant, and she is acting program director for the Lehigh Valley Health Network Street Medicine team. Nani’s 15-min. TEDx talk describes her work and the kind of challenges that her clients face.
  • Nani Cuadrado also has an op-ed on Responding to Lehigh Valley Homelessness, which includes recommendations for responding to six barriers that homeless people face: no street address; no phone; difficulty finding help; no transportation; no affordable housing; not enough shelter beds.
