The Heart of Justice: Jesus in Prison*
Lord, when did we see you ... in prison and visit you? – Matt. 25:37,39
Our fall workshop will focus on ways we can begin to remake our criminal justice system to provide healing, hope, restoration, and reconciliation to both offenders and victims of crime. The "War on Drugs," the "War on Crime," and "Zero Tolerance" polices have failed to reduce crime rates with their focus on harsh punishment; but these policies have resulted in mass incarceration; run-away spending on jails, prisons, and law enforcement; and exploitation of people of color, people in poverty, and people with mental disabilities.
The United States, with about 5% of the world's population, has 25% of the world's prisoners. While many states have finally begun to reduce their prison populations, Pennsylvania continues to build new prisons and increase corrections spending while cutting budgets for public schools and other human services.
Our program will review some of the major issues in our Prison-Industrial Complex, but the heart of this event will be to provide resources for engagement in restorative practices and to extend the conversation to church and community groups. The event will also look at new initiatives in the Lehigh Valley to teach and practice non-violent conflict resolution that will ultimately help to alleviate the causes of inappropriate behavior.
